Roast at Borough Market
I’d heard good things about Roast at Borough Market and saw that there was a 2 for 1 Breakfast deal on Toptable so there really was no other option but to book a table for the hubs and I for a Saturday morning relaxing breakfast. The one hitch was that the deal was only available from 8am – 9am – oh well, early start then! I didn’t mind much in the end, as it was lovely walking around Borough Market before the tourists started descending on the place. Some traders were just setting up stall when we arrived, others even later at around 10am.
Roast is located on the first floor of Floral Hall, opposite Monmouth Coffee (incidentally, Monmouth is closed for refurbishment until 16th Jan but is still selling coffee beans). You can read a little bit more about the restaurant here http://www.roast-restaurant.com/index.cfm?page=4 . The place was already 1/3 full when we arrived at 8.30am and filled up steadily to an almost full-house by 10am. I loved the high ceilings and massive windows which let in as much light as there was on a cold and grey January morning.
K and both ordered ‘The Full Borough’ with fried eggs which comes with a Ramsay of Carluke black pudding which I declined. Everything on the plate shouted quality – from the crispy smoked streaky bacon to the very excellent non-greasy fried bread. I’d have happily had a stack of that fried bread! The sausages were firm and juicy without giving you the feeling you were biting into a second-grade sausage injected with water to puff it up. The eggs were perfectly cooked to my liking with the yolks still slightly runny.
The service was spot on although I did note that the staff seemed a bit harried when service became busy. I overheard one of the waiters say that it wasn’t normally so busy in the mornings.
